Truancy among Public Senior High School Students: Basis for a Guidance Program on Alleviating Absenteeism

This descriptive research study was conducted to determine the different reasons of absenteeism among 300 Senior High School students from public school. The respondent of this study were given survey questionnaires forms with information data sheets for their profile such as age and sex. The results of this study became the bases for designing the proposed guidance program. Frequency, mean, percentage and independent T- Test were the statistical treatments used. Findings show that absenteeism of the students came from the five factors namely: (1) Physical Factor, (2) Health, (3) Personal Attitude, (4) Teacher-Related Factors (5) Classroom atmosphere, and (6) Home-Related Factors. Likewise, significant differences on several variables involving the six factors, age and sex were determined, and these were appropriately considered in developing a proposed guidance program. For future research and special project, it is recommended that the proposed program be implemented to evaluate its effectiveness and alleviate students’ absenteeism.
