Assessment of Co-Curricular Activities and their Contribution to the Enhancement of Pupils' Learning Outcomes
Synopsis
This descriptive evaluative research study aimed to assess co-curricular activities and their extent of contribution to the enhancement of learning outcomes in different subject areas, as well as their effectiveness in terms of attainment of objectives, advisers’ supervision, provision of opportunities for pupils’ personal and social development, and conduct of activities. To gather data, quantitative and qualitative instruments were utilized. The participants included Grade 6 pupils and teachers. Mean was used to describe the gathered data from the survey instruments, while the analyses of data from the interview questionnaires were done through content analysis. Findings indicated that co curricular activities contribute either to a great extent or very great extent the enhancement of learning outcomes in different subject areas. Co-curricular acivities were also found out to be effective in their attainment of objectives, supervision of advisers, provision of opportunities for pupils’ personal and social development, and conduct of activities. Nonetheless, the respondents gave explicit suggestions on how to improve the implementation of different co-curricular activities offered in their respective schools. Further research may be done to determine the impact of co-curricular activities in terms of pupils’ academic performance and teachers’ professional growth and development.
