The Phenomenology of Disclosure among Filipino Male Gays

Disclosing one’s homosexuality in a heterosexual dominated community will always be a continuous decision gays need to deal with. But, such choice is not as easy as there are a lot of factors needed to consider.  Due to this, confusion may arise that could hinder in their coming out process specifically their disclosure phase. Hence, this study aimed to explore the lived experiences of Filipino male gays on their phase of disclosure including the disclosure dilemmas. It also focused on their perceived meaning and essence of their disclosure. This qualitative phenomenological study recruited 12 self-identified gay participants, aged 19 to 30 years old, who have already disclosed their homosexuality to at least one of the following social groups: self, friends, family, and society through snowball sampling. Semi-structured interview questions and profile sheet made by the researcher were administered. The data analysis revealed and discussed the five purposes of the study: (1) experiences of gays in their disclosure phase; (2) disclosure dilemmas of gays; (3) reasons for disclosure; (4) coping styles and strategies of gays; and (5) meaning of disclosure. The emerged major themes and subthemes were categorized depending on the stated purposes. The conclusion from this study highlights the understanding and perception on the importance of disclosure to gays.
