Synopsis

More and more teachers of geography are starting to accept the idea that literature can be an effective medium in teaching geographic concepts. According to Eric Digest, the term literature refers to novels, short stories, poetry, plays and folktales. It comprises narratives as opposed to expository forms of writing that are found in traditional textbooks, reference books and news articles. Advocates of this idea have the reasons for using a literature-based approach: the natural link between geography and literature; the study of literature improves comprehension of geography; and the literature-based approach to geography improves reading comprehension.
