Correlates of Career Interest among Children of Stay-At-Home Fathers: Basis for a Career Guidance Program

The primary aim of this study was to find out the best predictor of career interest of pupils raised by stay-at-home fathers. The variables studied are self-concept, academic achievement, parent-child relationship and the career interest of pupils raised by stay-at-home fathers. Likewise, the researcher gathered data from pupils of stay-at-home mother for the purpose of comparison but the focus of the study was on the children of the stay-at-home fathers. The study was conducted at a Catholic School. The researcher used the purposive sampling technique in selecting the subjects involved in this study. Seventy pupils were the respondents and thirty-five of them were from Grades 4 to 6 pupils who were raised by stay-at-home fathers and the other half were pupils raised by stay-at-home mothers. Various standardized tests were given to them in gathering the necessary data; such as the Dimension of Self-Concept, Career Occupational Placement Survey for their career interest and the Parent-Child Relationship Inventory for the parents attitudes towards their parenting role. The results show that parents play a crucial role in the education as well as in the self-concept of pupils particularly in the domains of self-aspirations, leadership and initiative and academic interest. It was also revealed that parental support plays a crucial role in the growth of the child. Based from the results, it was recommended to have a program for the parents to better assist them in their parenting role and a career program for the pupils to have ideas on the different career in the society in preparation for their future.
