Parental Involvement, Students' Achievement and Attitude in Mathematics

The study aimed to describe parental involvement, students' achievement and attitude in Mathematics of third year high school students in Bangkal High School, Makati City during the school year 2012-2013. The descriptive-correlational research design was employed in this study. Seventy-three third year high school students and their parents were the respondents. Three research instruments were utilized in the study. These are the Parental Involvement Scale, the Mathematics Attitude Scale, and the Mathematics Achievement Test. It was found out that most of the students have below average achievement in mathematics. However, it was noted that they have a moderately positive attitude in mathematics. On the other hand, perceptions of parents and students on parental involvement showed that there was a significant relationship between their perspectives. Most of parents and students who served as respondents perceived that parents are occasionally or moderately involved in schoolwork and class work. But they believed that parents are regularly or highly involved in the provision of resource materials related to mathematics learning and the giving of parental guidance to their children. The results of the study revealed that parental involvement is significantly related to students' mathematics achievement and attitude. Moreover, a significant relationship was established between students' mathematics achievement and attitude in mathematics.
