Professional Learning Community: Teachers' Perception and Its Effects On Student Achievement
Synopsis
The development of Professional Learning Communities (PLC) is a new and popular concept in improving student achievement. This research study sought to determine the influences of Professional Learning Community (PLC) as perceived by Elizabeth Seton School educators through the use of the The Schools as Professional Staff Learning Community Questionnaire (SPSLCQ). Furthermore, the study also sought to discover the effect of the first year of implementation of a departmental Professional Learning Community (PLC) on student achievement in the content area of Mathematics. The study found that teachers' perception towards PLC affected how they made use of PLC as a tool in improving students' achievement. After two consecutive years of implementation, a marked improvement in students' mathematics grade was observed. This was achieved through teachers' collaborative efforts. The five dimensions of PLC have been manifested by teachers with a rating of very satisfactorythat helped students attain good rating performance. Through the teachers' collaborative efforts, important matters during regular meetings, such as refinement of learning plans, devising of current teaching strategies, and sharing of best practices were prioritized to ensure significant improvement on students' achievement.
