Synopsis

The main purpose of the study was to determine the conceptual understanding and procedural skills and attitude of grade seven pupils on integers during the school year 2013-2014. The study used descriptive method of research in looking into these three variables. To determine the attitudes of pupils towards mathematics an attitude scale was also developed. The data reveals that the level of conceptual understanding on integers of pupils was below mastery level and above average on procedural skills on basic concepts on integers. It is recommended that in order to establish better conceptual understanding, basic concepts should be given more emphasis when teaching integers. They should include different activities for them to really understand the concept of integers. One way of doing this would be peer groups, brighter students could teach those who need help in mathematics. And in-service training programs and summer institutes in mathematics should be regularly conducted to enable the mathematics teachers to update themselves with the new strategies and concepts of teaching integers.
