The Prewriting Strategies of Selected Fourth Year High School Students

This study aimed to explore the prewriting strategies employed by the selected fourth year students of San Juan City. The researcher examined the prewriting activities that the students used before they start developing an essay or a narrative as a means of expressing their ideas and thoughts using the English language. Moreover, this study suggests that focusing on writing as a process and introducing writing strategies that take into account students' learning needs, can benefit all students including those for whom writing in English is a challenge. The study shows that most students use webbing as a prewriting strategy, while others use listing or organizing of details, clustering, journalistic technique, and free writing. It was also observed that some students employed asking questions and brainstorming in the process. Based on conclusion drawn, prewriting strategy is a significant part of the writing process. More often than not, students who use prewriting strategies are able to construct meaning easily and are able to put their ideas in an organized manner than those who do not.
