Effects of Manipulative Materials on Mathematics Achievement of Grade Three Pupils

Synopsis

This study determined the effect of Manipulative Materials on Mathematics Achievement involving fractions of the grade three pupils of a public school. This study used quasi-experimental research design. The experimental design employing pretest and posttest in manipulative materials was used in this study to determine the effect of manipulative materials to mathematics achievement. A total of ninety 90 pupils composed of 34 male pupils and 56 female pupils participated in the study. They were grade three pupils of a public school for school year 2014-2015. The scope of the study focused on the effect of Manipulative Materials to Mathematics Achievement. The instruments used in the study were Pre Achievement Test and Post Achievement Test. The instruments were all content validated by panel of experts in the field. The results and findings of this study revealed that manipulative materials made of indigenous materials have higher significant effect of pupils Mathematics Achievement. Thus, pupils performed best with the use of homemade manipulative materials. As suggested, school administrators of a public school must establish competent learning communities like seminars and workshops that advance and help the productive use of manipulatives, use join forces team of mathematics teachers to support competent learning communities to show various pedagogical approaches with teachers in training sessions and
administer pupil interviews to acquire more awareness into how and why pupils used or did not use manipulatives the way they did.
