Synopsis

This study focused on providing support materials for vocabulary instruction to vocational senior secondary school teachers in China. It sought to:
1. Analyze the contents of the adopted English textbook to determine a specific strategy in vocabulary instruction which needs to be strengthened;
2. Prepare supplementary instructional materials for teachers’ use to enhance the development of the identified word meaning-getting strategy; and
3. Undertake a formative evaluation of the materials to establish their suitability to target users.

Research-basedconcepts related to the vocabulary instruction component of reading, in particular, the context clue strategy underpin this study. The processes in instructional materials development (IMD) make use of Francis C. Johnson’s (1972) model comprising three major phases, namely design phase, development phase, and dissemination phase. The last stage of theIMD systemis not within the scope of the study. The developed materials were subjected to a formative evaluation to determine their suitability. They were evaluated by a representative number of intended teacher-users in a vocational senior secondary school in China. The feedback obtained from the validation process served as the basis for the revision or modification ofthe materials.
