Development and Validation of Mathematics Achievement Test in a Public School
Synopsis
This study aimed to develop and validate fourth year mathematics achievement test in a public school. Specifically , it intend to specify the competencies, and content areas of Mathematics IV in order to succeed ;make a table of specifications for the skills , competencies , and content areas; construct test items that will measure the math aptitude and attitude of fourth year students; try out and item analyze the test to determine the difficulty and discriminate on indices of each item;establish evidences of validity and reliability of the instrument ; and prepare a manual for administering the test, scoring and interpreting the results. This study made use of the descriptive-developmental design. Two hundred (200) students from Rizal district were the respondents.
The first one hundred participants were from fourth year. The second try out had been given to the fourth year students of three secondary schools; The final try out is intended for the establishment of test validity and reliability was administered to the remaining two sections. To realize the objectives of this research study, the standard procedure in instrument development and validation was followed, namely: Phase I --- Planning Stage, Phase II --- Item Writing Stage, Phase III --- Try out Stage, Phase IV --- Evaluation Stage. Multiple choice was selected as the item format of the test. The item writer constructed 75 items of the test. Item analysis was also undertaken every after the first two try outs using the U-L Method. The item analysis resulted in the reduction of items from 69 items in the first draft to 60 items in the final draft.
