Development and Evaluation of Computer-Aided Instructional (CAI) Material for Solving the Unknown Variables in Linear Equations and Systems of Linear Equations

Synopsis

This study aimed to develop and to evaluate a computer-aided instructional (CAI) material for solving the unknown variables in linear equations and system of linear equations. The research used the descriptive-developmental design and followed the four stages, namely: planning, development, evaluation and revision. The mathematics teachers evaluated the developed CAI material in terms of objective, content and presentation, while the computer teachers evaluated the CAI material in terms of technical quality and instructional design. On the other hand, student-respondents evaluated the CAI material in terms of presentation.

The results of the evaluation of the material in terms of objectives, context, presentation, technical quality and instructional design showed that the CAI material is suitable as a supplementary material for freshmen students and a tool in teaching linear equations and system of linear equations by the mathematics teachers. The mathematics teachers agreed that the CAI material stated clearly its objectives based on the actual needs of the freshmen high school students. The computer teachers found the developed CAI material to be adequate for its purpose. The presentation of the lessons made the students actively involved. The delivery of the lessons helped the students to group the important concepts. The students agreed that they became a part of the concept and activity in the development of the CAI material. Furthermore, the developed CAI material will help maintain the professional development of the teachers and increase the school teaching resources.
