A Survey on the Language Needs for Developing the Communicative Skills of On-The-Job Training Tourism and Hotel Management Students of the Lyceum of the Philippines

This study was done with the students of International Tourism and Hotel Management in mind. The researcher has chosen these students since the students involved in this study are working in fields such as Front Office Operation, Bar Services, Travel Services, Food Beverage Management , etc. in a hotel, restaurant, bar and cruiseline industries which require students to learn a language for very specific purposes in their own field of work. In this case, the language needs of the tasks involved and carried out by the students taking On-the-Job Training in the said industry are important to be studied. This study attempted to investigate and describe the difficulties encountered by the students of the College of International Tourism and Hotel Management at the Lyceum of the Philippines and determine what factors attributed to these difficulties and use this as a basis in assessing their language needs to improve their communication skills using English when dealing with clients and guests in their workplace. This study aimed to measure the current level of language skills of the on-the-Job Training HRM and Tourism students of the Lyceum of the Philippines both in class and in their workplace specifically in terms of their speaking and listening skills and to describe the extent of the interaction between the OJT students and the guests in their workplace which at the end of the process this will be able to identify the language skills needed in improving the communicative skills of the On-the-Job Training Students in their interaction
