Toward the Development of Executive Development Program on Emotional Intelligence

Synopsis

Leadership plays an important role in the success of an organization. The principals and school heads as school leaders and managers are agents of change. And since change starts within their formation should be considered to effect change in the organization. This study sought to determine the level of emotional intelligence of school heads of the Diocesan Catholic School System of the Diocese of San Pablo as perceived by themselves in terms of emotional self-awareness, emotional self-expression, emotional awareness of others, interpersonal connections, compassion, and integrity. Based on the findings an executive development program was proposed. The study involved 19 school heads of fifteen elementary schools of DCSS; 15 of whom were principals and four were head teachers. Because the population was small the researcher used the population survey. The researcher used the descriptive method of research carrying out the survey technique by means of questionnaires. To have a follow-up inquiry, the researcher also conducted a random personal and phone interviews. The questionnaires were validated by 10 experts in the field of education; four from PNU and six from the district of Los Banos. The data gathered were manually computed. Frequency and percentage were used to deal with personal profile of respondents. Average weighted mean was used to determine the level of emotional intelligence. Ranking was employed to find out the strengths and weaknesses of school heads across dimensions of emotional intelligence. To test the reliability of the questionnaires Cronbach alpha was used through SPSS. The study revealed that the overall mean of the level of emotional
intelligence of the school heads was average. Among the six dimensions of emotional intelligence, the emotional self-awareness and interpersonal connections ranked first and the emotional self-expression ranked last.
