Physics Performance and Science Interest: A Basis for Proposing an Intervention Program
Synopsis
The study aimed to determine if the Immaculate Conception Parochial School (ICPS) fourth year students' interests affect their science academic performance. A causal-comparative descriptive research design was used, with the researcher-made instrument called Student Interest Inventory Survey (SIIS) as the main instrument. The instrument basically determined the students' level of interest in the four disciplines of Science namely Integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. One hundred fourteen (114) fourth year students coming from intact sections of ICPS were selected to answer the instrument. Data analysis was done using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Specifically, the Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used to determine the existing relationship between the students' science academic performance and their level of interest. In addition, ANOVA was applied to establish significant differences in the students' science academic performance when they were categorized according to their interest. Results revealed that the average science academic performance of the ICPS students is 81.80% (approaching proficiency).
