Metadiscourse of Filipino Writers' Argumentative Texts Across Disciplines

The study examined the use of metadiscourse in the dissertations of Filipino writers across four disciplines, Biology, Engineering, Business Administration and Applied Linguistics. The study determined the patterns of Metadiscourse use in the dissertations of Filipino writers in selected disciplines, the similarities and differences in the use of Metadiscourse in terms of the amount and type of Metadiscourse, the factors that may account for the similarities and differences in Metadiscourse use and the implications of the use of metadiscourse by Filipino writers in terms of reader awareness

The study used the descriptive-qualitative research method. Forty dissertations of Filipino writers in the four disciplines were used as data which were taken from two premier state and two private universities in the country. Toanalyze the data, the Taxonomy of Metadiscourse in Academic Writing by Hyland (2005) was used. To complement Hyland‟s model, Salager-Meyer‟s (1997) Taxonomy of hedges, Halliday and Hasan‟s (1976) concept of cohesion and Samraj‟s (2008) classifications forcitationss were used.
