Synopsis

AI tools assist with medical care documentation, diagnosis, imaging analysis, symptom interpretation, and other aspects of clinical decision-making. Participants at a National Academies workshop explored how AI may affect the information contained in medical records received by the Social Security Administration (SSA) for disability evaluation. Discussions also focused on how the medical profession evaluates the usefulness and accuracy of some tools in documentation, diagnosis, imaging, and symptom evaluation. Other conversations covered how AI-generated or AI-modified records might be identified; what AI systems may miss or exclude from medical records; and considerations related to errors, transparency, fraud, and third-party use of AI to interpret medical information. This proceedings of a workshop-in brief summarizes the presentations and discussions from the event.
