Synopsis

This study determined whether the social constructs, namely familial influence, peer influence, community environment, classroom cultural climate, and school climate predict mathematics proficiency and motivation. It also examined whether motivation mediate the relationship between mathematics proficiency and each of the identified social constructs. The role of the social factors that influence mathematics proficiency and motivation was described. Data were gathered from 1249 eighth grade students through self report questionnaires and a developed mathematics proficiency test.
