Development and Validation of a Design Guide for K to 12-Based Science Learning Materials for Open High School Program (OHSP)
Synopsis
The study developed and validated a design guide for K to 12-based learning materials to address the curriculum mismatch the Open High School Program (OHSP) is currently facing. This
study utilized the descriptive developmental research design and went through the following fundamental phases: 1) Development of the Design Guide; 2) Validation and Evaluation of the
Design Guide; 3) Development of the Sample Learning Materials; 4) Validation and Evaluation of the Learning Materials; and 4) Try-out and Finalization of the Sample Learning Materials. This study utilized purposive sampling technique in selecting the 46 curriculum experts who evaluated the design guide and sample learning materials and the 62 Grade 8 OHSP students who tried-out the learning materials. This study also made use of a 5-point Likert scale to evaluate the design guide and the learning materials. Data analyses included weighted mean, standard deviation, and percentage. Inter-rater Agreement Reliability Test, Aiken’s Content Validity Index, and Fleiss’ Kappa Coefficient were also used to determine the extent of consistency, reliability, and validity of the ratings made by the experts. Results showed that the developed design guide and learning materials has high acceptability rating from the curriculum experts. The inter-rater reliability test, Aiken’s CVI, and Fleiss’ Kappa coefficient showed high consistency and agreement level among the experts. The OHSP learners also gave a high perception rating on the use of the learning materials crafted using the developed design guide. With the high rating of the learning materials gathered from both experts and students, the design guide has been successful in providing a set of guidelines, instructions, and standards to develop learning materials that conform with the guidelines of the Learning Resources Management and Delivery System (LRMDS) and the theories and principles of the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum. It is recommended that the developed and validated Design Guide be used in developing more learning materials in different topics and/or learning areas. Future researchers who wishes to take the same field of investigation are encouraged to test the effect of the K to 12-Based learning materials in the achievement of the OHSP learners. Developing a design guide for OHSP Senior high School is also included in the list of recommendations. School administrators may conduct module seminar-writeshops to address the need for the program.
