Catch-Up Material in Operations on Integers Using Flipbook Through Agile Model
Synopsis
Before the pandemic, Philippine education struggled with persistent underachievement, particularly in mathematics, notably in operations on integers. This issue gained attention due to consistently poor performance in standardized assessments such as the NAT, PISA, and TIMSS. Presently, low mastery of integer operations in classrooms poses a concern, impeding progress in advanced mathematical topics. This study addresses this challenge by presenting the development, testing, and deployment of Math flipbook—a catch-up material designed to enhance Grade 7 students performance in operations on integers. This initiative aligns with the Rapid Assessment of Pandemic Impact on Development (RAPID) Framework and the Basic Education Development Program (BEDP) 2030. Employing the Agile Model, the study progressed through Requirement Analysis, Design, Development, Testing, and Deployment phases. The flipbook integrates engaging themes based on student preferences while adhering to Grade 7 learning objectives.
Thorough testing by experts confirmed the flipbook's effectiveness in delivering educational content and fostering meaningful learning experiences. Evaluation criteria encompassed content, instructional, technical, and usability aspects, including Multimedia Design, Overall Interface, Controls & System Information, Customizability, and Hyperlinks. High ratings across these dimensions attest to the flipbook's efficacy as a learning resource. Deployment of the flipbook led to significant improvements in student test scores, underscoring its role as a catch-up material in mathematics education. Student evaluation and feedback also reflected high satisfaction with the factors mentioned. Recommendations for future research include longitudinal studies to assess long-term impact, comparative analyses with traditional textbooks, and exploration on future AI integration. This study contributes to the evolving literature on digital instructional materials, highlighting the potential of flipbook-based resources as catch-up material, to improve student engagement and academic achievement in mathematics education.
