Development of Growth Mindset Modules for Open High School Students
Synopsis
One of the problems that the Philippine education has faced is the number of student-dropouts. The dropout rates affect the potential to secure a well-paying job to support students and contribute to the increasing unemployment rate in the country. In order to address such problem, the Department of Education created a program that aims to reduce the increasing dropout rate in the Philippines. The Open High School Program was one of the created alternative delivery mode of learning for secondary education, and was implemented as per DO 46, S. 2006. However, one of the problems that was encountered by the program is that some of the students who enrolled earlier did not come back to report in school. To address such problem, it is important to study and give emphasis on the non-cognitive factors that can affect student’s academic performance. Mindset is one of the most studies non-cognitive factor which affects a students’ performance. This research created modules that aims to promote growth mindset among the Open High School Students. There were ten (10) modules created which discusses mindset and other important concepts related to it. The modules were validated by experts in terms of its content and how relevant it is to the topic being discussed. Four out of the ten modules were implemented to a class grade nine open high school students. Validation results showed that the contents of the module were relevant to the topics being studies. Evaluation from the students were also satisfactory, which is suggestive that the students were able to learn new things and garner new knowledge from the modules.
