Using Reading Like a Historian Method in Teaching Rizal Course Among Foreign Students

The main focus of the study is to improve the historical thinking skills of the foreign students in Rizal course using Reading Like A Historian Method. The study sought to (1) develop lesson exemplars out of primary documents through Reading Like A Historian Method, (2) validate lesson exemplars and authenticated historical sources in developing historical reading skills utilizing primary source analysis through "Reading Like A Historian Method" and (3) try-out and evaluate the lesson exemplars.Phase, and Evaluation and Validation Phase. The result of the try-out showed that Reading Like A Historian Method from Stanford University is very acceptable and efficient for the foreign students since it made them engage appropriately in any particular historical source. Moreover, the foreign students learn the history and culture of the host country by employing the four reading strategies, namely: sourcing, contextualization, corroboration, and close reading. They learned how to assess historical facts/events, and how to dissect numerous viewpoints of any historical issues. The four skills made them study Rizal course more critical and analytical. In this study, the participants were four (4) foreign students of Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite enrolled in Rizal course for the Second Semester of Academic Year 2020-2021 and have been residing in the Philippines for two or more years. Additionally, the participants were deemed less familiar with Rizal as Philippine National Hero, knowing only little of his life and accomplishments when they took up General Education 04 (Readings in Philippine History). Utilizing the descriptive-development research design, the research study developed and implemented lesson exemplars using primary documents and applying Reading Like A Historian approach. The process of implantation underwent stages, namely: Design Phase, Development Phase, and Evaluation and Validation Phase.
