Development of Performance-Based E-Learning Activities in a Mathematics using a Design Thinking Framework
Synopsis
Mathematics is considered as one of the most difficult subjects in school. In fact, previous studies often indicate that students are performing poorly on the said subject. The Philippines is not an exemption to this observation as indicated by the results of recent international assessments. Consequently, educators in the country are urged to look for teaching methods that will spark students' interest in learning mathematics. An emerging strategy in teaching mathematics is Design Thinking, which could be incorporated through the use of existing e-learning tools like Learning Management Systems (LMS). Previous studies have noted that Design Thinking can better prepare learners to understand mathematical concepts and develop innovative thinking with a radical user-oriented approach. The strategy has five stages namely Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Evaluate, which logically guides learners towards the achievement of the desired goals. Relative thereto, this developmental study incorporated the design thinking framework to develop performance-based e-learning activities on Conic Sections for senior high school STEM students in a private institution. The activities were likewise designed to trigger students' design thinking skills and foster positive insights towards math. Student reflections indicate that the participants appreciated the e-learning activities and their real-life applications. Moreover, their outputs demonstrate not just their ability to use mathematical concepts but also their creativity and resourcefulness in finding solutions to problems. The results of this study can help material developers in conceptualizing design thinking activities. Furthermore, this study can guide teachers in incorporating design thinking to improve lesson delivery and providing performance-based activities.
