Culture-Based Toolkit for Reading in Philippine History: Tarlac Context

The Philippine education must be a Filipino education. Thus, the integration of Tarlac local culture is a must in teaching particularly in Philippine History. Philippine history as a course must be taught from the perspective of Filipino teachers rooted in the local culture. Hence, this descriptive developmental study was conceptualized to create a culture-based toolkit for Readings in Philippine History for college students in a Teacher Education Institution. More importantly, the fundamental objective of the study is to make students and teachers situate themselves as part of the national historical narratives to strengthen nationalist consciousness and the spirit of nation-building. The study participants are the local culture key informants and social studies and social science faculty members in the province of Tarlac. Findings show that the local culture of Tarlac, in terms of tangible immovable culture and intangible cultural heritage, can be integrated into teaching RPH using the developed culture-based toolkit. Further, based on the validators, the culture-based toolkit was appropriate for teaching Readings in Philippine History. The researcher expected this study to shed light on the importance of understanding and appreciating culture while achieving the desired learning outcomes.
