A Proposed Instructional Materials to Teach Dystopian Novels to Young Adults

The reading of literature, particularly dystopian novels, are important for readers to understand future and present real-world issues. The study analyzed the selected dystopian novels in relation to the concepts of society, culture, human behavior/relationships, and nature environment which are essential for learners today. The use of Theodor Adorno’s Negative Dialectics, Hannah Arendt’s Totalitarianism, Antonio Gramsci’s Culture and Marxism, and Greg Garrard’s Ecocriticism paved the way to create questions for the instructional material that facilitates the discussion of selected young adult dystopian novels. The instructional material was also constructed in connection with the K-12 curriculum, revised Bloom’s taxonomy, and ideas connected to critical thinking and constructivism. The developed instructional material allows facilitation of meaning construction and a thorough understanding of the political, social, economic, and environmental issues in the novels. It may be a necessary component in meaningful literary discussions and ultimately accommodate learners’ growing interest in the matters of the world around them.
