Framework in Assessing Students' Learning in Junior High School Science in Flexible Instruction Delivery
Synopsis
This study attempted to develop a framework describing the assessment practices of Junior High School science teachers in flexible instruction. Framed by Teachers' Assessment Literacy in Practice (TALiP), it utilized design-based research (DBR) employing concurrent-convergent mixed design. The quantitative measures were gathered through the adapted multidimensional surveys which examined the assessment profiles of 513 science teachers in terms of their approaches, beliefs, self-perceived skills, and professional learning priorities and preferences on assessment. The qualitative measures were captured through semi-structured interviews exploring the four facets of assessment practices in flexible instruction: the obligations, obstacles, outcomes, and opportunities. Data synthesis were presented in a narrative contiguous approach, employing embedding,
and joint display through pillar integration process (PIP).
The convergence generated the salient features which proposed the framework reflecting the practices of the science teachers in assessing students’ learning. It comprises six variables. The macro, meso, and micro provide the contexts of assessment in flexible instruction. The drivers emphasize engaging with the learners and supporting student agency. The filters identified learners’ mindsets, teachers’ competence, and technological capacity. The mediators present effective practices such as articulation, contextualization, differentiation, and collaboration. The procedures underpin the assessment cycle. The core outcomes include producing science learners who can independently acquire and connect scientific knowledge, skills, and attitude to become scientifically, technologically, and environmentally literate individuals. The framework underwent validation to establish the framework's appropriateness and applicability.
