Predictors of Physics Performance at Marhs

Synopsis

The aims of this study is to determine which among the predictors greatly influence the academic performance in physics of students of MARHS. This study is limited to the identification of the correlates and predictors of the performance of physics students in MARHS-SHS. Taken as respondents in this study, were 100 Senior High School students who had regular subject loads in the academic year 2017- 2018. A total of five (5) independent variables- English, Mathematics, Science, GPA, and General Scholastic Aptitude were considered in this study. The data were classified on the basis of the research design and the problem formulated. To generate an appropriate analysis, the different descriptive statistical measures: minimum, maximum, arithmetic mean, and standard deviation were used. To show the relationship between the academic performance in physics and the predictive variable, the Pearson’s product moment coefficient of correlation (r) was employed. The result indicated that a typical SHS student at MARHS has an above average performance in GSA, GPA, & SCI.

Achievement, but average performance in ENG and MATH. The students had average physics performance. There is no significant relationship between sex and physics performance and the significant predictors of physics performance are ENG11, MATH11, and GSA. At least these three predictors could predict whether the student will obtain a greater performance in physics at MARHS. In view of the results drawn, it is recommended to create proper student’s profiling based on English achievement, Mathematics achievement, Science achievement, GPA achievement, and Scholastic Achievement to give a special attention to identify students who need enrichment in preparation for collegiate studies. Provide continuous monitoring on the students’ performance in physics and enhance the integration of Physics principles in English, and Mathematics subjects to provide opportunities for the students to gain and hone the skills and concepts required for the course.
