Development of Supplementary Learning Materials for Fitness and Physical Activity Plans for Junior High School Students
Synopsis
Physical activity engagement is a weapon that a junior high school student should develop either with the presence or absence of facilities in a school or a community. Hence, they should find ways to make themselves physically fit and active. Physical Education class in school is the best avenue for students’ physical involvement, and teachers should teach students' at least the basic of fitness and physical activity planning, thereby making them active and be able to positively influence their peers, family, and people in community and society at large. The new K-12 PE curriculum expects that students understand the value of physical fitness and its application to their lives. For this reason, this study focuses on the development of supplementary learning materials that will help students engage in physical activities and maintain or improve their physical fitness using the skills they are learning and acquiring from their physical education class. This study utilized the developmental descriptive method while employing document analysis. The researcher selected participants using a purposive sampling technique. Furthermore, a validated survey questionnaire was administered to 300 students and 15 teachers of selected public high schools in Metro Manila. The results revealed that students participated actively in class but have no idea on fitness and physical activity planning. In addition, though teachers believed the importance of fitness and physical activity planning, they gave no priority to them as primary parts of their class activity. Finally, the developed supplementary learning materials on fitness and physical activity plans successfully passed the validators' assessment with a "very acceptable" remark, thereby affirming its practicality and usefulness for the Junior High school students.
