Synopsis

The ecole normale, or “Normal School” derives from Latin, meaning standard, rule, or norm, which generally aims to establish teaching standards. Supported by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), this coffee table book “An Enduring Legacy: The Journey of Normal Schools in the Philippines” offers an engaging exploration of these academic institutions. Through a collection of photographs, narratives, and commentaries, the book highlights the rich history, milestones, and contributions in teacher education of the 10 normal schools spread across regions in the Philippines, namely: Philippine Normal University, Bicol University, Mariano Marcos State University, Pangasinan State University, Palawan State University, Cebu Normal University, Leyte Normal University, West Visayas State University, Bukidnon State University, and Western Mindanao State University.

This publication not only showcases the visual beauty of these institutions but also underscores their significant contributions to education and culture, fostering greater appreciation and understanding among readers. As the book conveys, this work is “a labor of love and commitment and idealism and collaboration…”.
