Social Dominance Orientation, Sex-Related Values and Attitude Among Filipino Youth
Synopsis
The study aims to determine the relationship of the social dominance orientation, sexual values, and attitude towards sex and same sex. It also intends to ascertain if social dominance orientation predicts the sex-related values and attitude of the Filipino youth. The purpose of the study was to identify the values and attitude of the Filipino youth regarding sexual engagements. The study hypothesized that there will be significant relationship between the variables, and SDO is a predictor of sexual values, attitude towards premarital sex, and same sex of the Filipino youth. The study was quantitative in nature, specifically a descriptive-correlational study. It made use of a survey method for data collection. It involved 585 participants composed of 307 high school and 278 college students. Four instruments to measure the constructs plus the profile sheet were the main instruments of the study. Findings revealed that the Filipino youth have an average level of social dominance orientation.
They have dominant absolutist sexual values, average intention, permissive attitude, and societal pressure but with an average to high self-efficacy regarding sexual engagements. In terms of attitude towards the same sex, most respondents have an average level of rejection of proximity, pathologizing homosexuality, and support with low level of modern heterosexism. Based on the result of the Pearson correlation, several variables have a significant relationship. Relativism and hedonism have the highest correlation of r=.662. Results of regression analysis indicated that SDO predicts the perceived societal and peer pressure of the Filipino youth to engage in sex. In addition, hedonistic sexual values predicts the intention, permissive attitude, and perceived social norm of the participants towards sex. In response to the findings, a framework has been developed to address the issues related to the outcomes of the study. Educational and guidance related interventions and recommendations are stated and proposed.
