Synopsis

The study aimed to determine the association of social goals on the academic achievement of sample Filipino adolescent students. In this study, social goals were defined as a set of standards or procedures that an individual does / performs to adapt to his / her social environment to meet his / her purpose in life. There were five dimensions of social goals proposed by Dowson and McInerney (2004): social affiliation (motivated by a desire to achieve academically in order to build, enhance, and maintain interpersonal relationships with peer groups); social approval (involves wanting to engage academically in order to gain approval of peers, teachers, and parents); social concern (characterized by a desire to achieve academically to be able to extend assistance to others in their academics and personal development); social responsibility (motivates effort for school to fulfill interpersonal commitment or satisfy social role obligations); and social status (disposes the student to do more in academic undertakings in order to attain wealth and increase one's social status in a particular social space).
