Kultural na Pagsasalin ng mga Piling Kuwentong-Bayan ng “Treasury of Stories”

This study aimed to translate a collection of folklores that can be used to describe the cultural elements contained in the translated texts. Communicative Approach of Nida (1969) was used as part of meaning-based translation. Malinowski Ethno-linguistics’ theory with the viewpoint of Lefevere’s (1992) was also used in the study as they shared the same concept that in cultural translation, language and culture are interrelated. The translated works may serve as guide to teacher or additional reading materials of students of Imus National High School (INHS). To realize this goal the following objectives have been identified: to translate ten (10) selected stories from the “Treasury of Stories”; to present cultural elements with regard to two (2) types of culture: Material Culture and Non-material Culture; to test the translated texts through the validation of the experts. The research method used was Descriptive-Evaluative. Qualitative data were collected using a questionnaire. Experts’ evaluation and commentary on translation, and analysis of the cultural factors found in each text bolster the result of the questionnaire. The study found out that the translated stories were evident of cultural elements that indicate the identity of each ethnic group as well as may add one or two factors such as Equipment and Dialects that can be a guide to an analysis of the cultural factors in each work. Word for word or verbatim translation of terminologies, idioms or phrases from English to Filipino especially the native words or dialect is not possible because of the remoteness of its resemblance in appearance, phonetic and meaning. Therefore, the application of the Cultural translation theory of Katan (2004) in the translation of the selected literary stories is applicable. Based on the findings of the study, it is highly recommended to utilize the texts as a platform in learning the recognition and appreciation of the cultural elements in translation to be a basis for deeper understanding of the culture of each ethnic group.
