Synopsis

English language learners need support in developing vocabulary knowledge to improve their comprehension. In support to readers’ vocabulary growth, the study prepared mini-lessons for reading vocabulary development of grade 8 ESL learners based on twelve (12) reading selections of Afro-Asian Literature provided by the curriculum guide. Following the descriptive-developmental research design, the study followed the three phases of Johnson’s model from Needs Assessment Phase, Design and Development Phase, to Validation Phase, with seventy (76)  respondents answering the Tier Two Word Rating Scale in Degree of Word Knowledge to determine the priority words to be included in the Design and Development of Mini-lessons. Three (3) Master Teachers from the Division of City of San Fernando and Division of Pampanga validated the mini-lessons; while two (2) English teachers implemented the mini-lessons among target learners. In validating the mini-lessons, five (5) indicators were set as criteria:  (1) Format and Design; (2) Content; (3) Organization and Presentation; (4) Language and Style; and (5) Elements of a Mini-lesson. Results showed that generally, all validators and teachers strongly agreed that the mini-lessons for reading vocabulary development of Grade 8 ESL learners were acceptable and satisfied the five criteria used. For future studies, the study recommends the use of mini-lessons in teaching vocabulary for Grade 8 ESL learners and to test the effectiveness of the developed mini-lessons in developing reading vocabularies of students.
