Synopsis

This study was conducted to determine effective teaching strategy that will address the pressing needs of the workplace and cultivate appropriate strategic intervention materials (SIMs) that will develop the academic performance, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills of the students. The study was conducted using the developmental design method. The setting includes three weeks of the curriculum calendar year with one and one-half hours allotted in the subject (earth science) using the SIMs. It also employed the use of researcher- developed test questionnaires for the pre-test and post-test to determine if there is a change before and after intervention and further determine the effects of the strategic intervention materials (SIMs) on students’ academic performance, critical thinking and problem-solving skills regarding earth science subject. A 50-item multiple choice test was used because it is the most relevant to the study. The modules using SIMs were validated by the experts to be acceptable and marked substantial in improving the academic performance, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills. The results showed the extremely significant difference on the mean scores of the pre and post-tests in the academic performance and critical thinking skills. The SIMs-based modules help in the improvement of the students’ academic performance in general but not necessarily improving problem-solving skills.
