Development and Validation of Supplemental Science Instructional Materials (ScIMs) Using Electronic Games on Force, Motion and Energy for Grade 9
Synopsis
Development and validation of supplemental Science Instructional Materials (ScIMs) using Electronic Games on Force, Motion, and Energy for grade nine (9) was the main objective of this study to assist teachers in dealing with students' diverse learning styles. The researcher followed the developmental research design in developing the supplemental ScIMs using electronic games. The influence of game-based learning theory and the use of science process skills were the foundations for developing the different electronic games to infuse learning in a more innovative way. There were seven (7) electronic games developed and validated by experts teaching Science and an ICT programmer. The findings show that the games are acceptable in terms of its game usability and mechanics heuristics, game play heuristics, and the game educational value and emotional immersion. The supplemental ScIMs using electronic games were also subjected to first and second try-outs among grade 9 students and revealed that the electronic games largely enhanced their academic performance, as measured by paired sample t-test and partial eta squared test. The supplemental ScIMs using electronic games are fit for grade nine students. The researcher proposes that the developed and validated supplemental ScIMs using electronic games may be used as a supplementary tool in teaching grade nine Forces, Motion, and Energy. Furthermore, it may also support teachers in providing an interactive platform in teaching physics from a more engaging perspective.
