The Motivation, Needs and Satisfaction of Isabela State University Athletes

Synopsis

This quantitative study aimed to determine the levels of motivation, needs and satisfaction of 1,301 athletes in ISU using frequency and mean distribution, percentage, ranking and analysis of variance, t-test, and Pearson r.

Results showed that majority of the ISU athletes were males, ages ranging from 18 – 20, have a monthly family income of 5,000 and below. The athlete-respondents have been in their chosen field of sports for at least one year and their highest level of competitions participated is school level. As to the level of motivation, in terms of to know the athletes were very high intrinsically motivated, while intrinsic motivation to accomplished and to experienced stimulation were high, and extrinsic motivation and amotivation were also high. The level of needs of ISU athletes, there is a “high” level in terms of competence, connectedness and autonomy. There is a significant difference on levels of needs that exists among sports events played. And in the level of satisfaction there is a “very high” level of satisfaction to coach and teammates and “high” level of satisfaction to team performance and ISU sports program. There is a significant difference on levels of satisfaction among sports events played. And there is a positive correlation among the levels of motivation, need, and satisfaction of the ISU athletes.
