Development and Validation of Science Instructional Materials (ScIMs) Using Games in Grade 8 Force, Motion, and Energy
Synopsis
Development and validation of game-based Science Instructional Materials (ScIMs) in grade eight (8) Forces, Motion, and Energy was the main objective of this study to support teachers in dealing with learners’ varied learning styles. The researcher followed the method of instrumentation in developing the ScIMs using games. The influence of game theory, cultural learning and use of science process skills were the underpinning within the development of the learning activities to stimulate academic performance. There were 15 game-based ScIMs developed that were validated by experts teaching Science. The ratings obtained were treated statistically and yielded an acceptable Cronbach alpha coefficient. The ScIMs were also subjected to first and final try-outs among grade 8 students and obtained significant difference in the pre-test and posttest scores, as measured by the t-test of dependent means. Based on the gathered results the game-based ScIMs are fit for use in grade 8 Science classes. The researcher proposes that the developed and validated ScIMs using games may be used as supplementary instructional materials in teaching grade eight Forces, Motion, and Energy. Also it may further support teachers in providing new perspective of a pedagogical approach with Filipino cultural context.
