Cultural Practices of Kankana-Ey Toward the Development of Lesson Exemplar in Understanding Culture, Society and Politics

This ethnographic research endeavored to identify, describe, and document the cultural practices of the Kankana-ey in Alicia, Isabela along conception and pregnancy, birth and infancy, childhood, courtship and marriage, adulthood, death and burial. It also look into the profile of this group of people in terms of Sex, Age, Occupation, Educational Attainment, Place of Origin, Position/Designation in the Community, Years of Stay in Alicia, Isabela. It also identified the Indigenous Knowledge System and Practices (IKSP) of Kankana-ey that contribute in Understanding Culture, Society and Politics. The data were gathered through participant observation, interviews, fieldnotes. The data gathered were transcribed and analyzed. Result revealed that the Kankana-ey have rich cultural heritage. The final report was presented to the Kankana-ey in the presence of the people from NCIP for validation. After the validation, topics relevant to the teaching of Understanding Culture, Society and Politics were used as bases of the Lesson Exemplars to be developed. The Developed Lesson Exemplar will be a great help to strengthen the Culture of Kankana-ey and which may also add to Filipino’s rich and unique cultural heritage. It is a worthy contribution to DepEd program on the localization, contextualiztion, and indigenization of local materials in education. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the Lesson Exemplar be used by teachers in teaching UCSP.
