Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Synopsis
Universal Design for Learning is an educational framework by Dr. David Rose and Dr. Ann Meyer, the founders of Center for Applied Specialized Technology Incorporated, UDL is a flexible framework that think of an approach to teaching and learning that gives equal opportunity for all kinds of students to succeed by using varieties of teaching methods, because of this improves and optimize the teaching and learning, and it removes any barriers to learning and finally it makes all learners and ‘Expert Learners’. Universal Design for Learning has three main principles: First is Engagement stands for “The Why” of learning, this is where Teachers are encouraged to use different methodologies to motivate learners and sustain their interest. The second principle is Representation, it is “The What” of learning, on this principle the Teachers are encouraged to present information in a variety of formats, it may be in the form of text, images, video, audio, or practical activities. The third is Action and Expression, this principle is “The How” of learning, here Teachers must provide multiple opportunities for students to express their knowledge in the most interesting way. Universal Design for Learning is indeed a powerful approach since it helps the educator to anticipate and plan for all kinds of learners, it is also beneficial to all learners since it is a student-centered approach because it values the needs of the learners and it ensures that the greatest range of learners can access and engage in learning.
