Understanding by Design and Outcomes-Based Education

My report has two topics, which are UBD or Understanding by design and OBE or what we call the outcome-based education. When we say UBD, it’s a curriculum planning framework for teachers and curriculum writer that helps students apply what they learn in a course to the real world, which deepens and enriches their learning experience. UBD focuses on the learning outcomes rather than the learning process. UBD is unique because it is based to also known as Backward design which focuses on learning goals as a result of instruction before planning learning activities and teaching methods. Using a backward design offers a concrete way of communicating learning expectations. Also said, creating a clear set of learning expectations using UBD often creates higher student achievement because the organized approach outlines what is to be learned at the end of the lesson. Wiggins and McTighe (2005). It has 3 (Three) stages of designs, instructional design model. The alignments of these stages could help students develop understanding and transfer.

OBE or the Outcome-based education focuses on the outcomes/goals, also focused on how students should reach the goals/outcomes we set for them. OBE is also means to have an emphasis on clearly articulated idea of what students are expected to know and be able to do, that is, what skills and knowledge they need to have when the leave their school. The purpose of OBE is to let learners to take responsibility for their own learning, and we provide feedback on their outcome/s, also to expand the knowledge and skills of the learners. There are 3 (Three) OBE Models. 

1. Outcomes-Driven Developmental Model or ODDM 
2. Spady Model
3. The McREL Model or Marzano Model.
