Constructivism

As with everything in the world, we all start small and dream big. For instance, as teachers, we all start from Educ-1 to Educ-6 before we actually become professionals. We are constructing our knowledge from basic to complex. This is how constructivism actually works, according famous psychologist – Lev Vygotsky – the concept of scaffolding is essential in learning through a Zone Proximal Development. We will discuss it in a bit.  Learners are said to learn a lot when accompanied with an adult or a more knowledgeable other. This allows us teachers to build knowledge based on existing information our learners know. As teachers, we are the more knowledgeable other that learners should rely on. Similar to a construction site. As teachers, we must able to impart knowledge in a way that the students will be able to relate knowledge to previous learnings. Thereafter, they will be able to manipulate information to fit what they had. Best example that we have is for language instruction. We are first taught to speak phonemes and pronunciation, then we are taught how to make a sentence, then we somehow learn how to make an essay, then we are taught to make a poem and other pieces of literature. This is important in the way that we are teaching students as well. Starting of students in basics gradually moving up to complex.
