Cognitivism

There are many perspectives and/or theories in teaching and learning that have been applied in the classroom decades ago, and still continue to be used today. One of them is the perspective/theory on cognitivism, which concerns itself with what learners know and how they come to acquire it. With cognitivism, teachers play a big role on helping our students and learners connect concepts, ideas, and thoughts that are essential in preparing them for the real world. Through the most basic unit of understanding called scheme, children will be able to discover the essences of each thing in the environment they are in. Their knowledge proves to be constantly changing as old knowledge is adapted/replaced with new information brought about by a more knowledgeable other and/or exploring on their own. With cognitivism, we, as teachers need to take note that learners are active participants in the learning process. It essential to pay particular attention to how learners structure, organize, and sequence information in order to facilitate optimal learning. As years pass, the methods to ensure optimal learning of children continue to evolve. It is our responsibility and oath as teachers to continue creating and understanding more ways to facilitate effective learning of the most important people in our passion, our dear students. Watch this online report on cognitivism to get to know more about its uses and importance in the classroom.
