Development of Community Counseling Activities for Effective Parenting

This study aimed to develop a proposed community counseling activities for the parents for effective parenting. Parents would be taught to discipline their own children in a more effective way so that they would be contributing to the community, people who are competent, affectionate, respectful, responsible and productive individuals. Using a qualitative design, the researcher employed a semi-structured interviews in gathering data on the perceptions and beliefs of eighteen parents of Evangelical Christian churches with children ages 5-17. The data gathered from the interviews and observations were presented in a detailed interpretive findings with quoted narrative sections provided as supporting evidences. The result of this study found that regardless of SES, Filipino parents are mostly loving, appreciative, responsive, attentive, resilient and open to good communication. Apparently, the participants still use the traditional parenting using corporal punishment, particularly spanking and shouting, combined with open, firm and consistent communication.
