Development and Validation of Performance Tasks on Mathematical Modeling

The study aimed to develop and validate a performance tasks on Mathematical Modeling in Junior High School Algebra. Design and developmental method of research was used in this study with the aid of an expert’s validation checklist as data gathering instrument. To develop a performance tasks on Mathematical Modeling (MM), a modified instructional model (IDM) was utilized that included preparation, development, validation and try-out stage. In the preparation stage, the researcher identified the competencies to be included from the Mathematics curriculum set by the Department of Education (DepEd). In the development stage, the researcher identified the type of Mathematical Tasks used that elicit MM skills. In the Validation stage, there were two phases of validation. In the first phase of validation, the pools of critics were two Math experts from Philippine Normal University and three from the DepEd-Pampanga and in the second phase, there were three Math experts from the DepEd-Pampanga who assessed the developed performance tasks. Likewise, in the try-out stage, there was an initial and final try-out of the material to Grade 10 students from SY 2018 – 2019 and 2019 – 2020 respectively. Arithmetic Mean, Standard deviation and rating scale were used to analyzed the obtained data. The study concluded that the developed performance tasks on MM were valid and useful based on the experts’ validation. In addition, the developed performance tasks were integrated with the 6Cs, six principles of Galbraith and three approaches of MM by Galbraith. This means, it can contribute to the achievement of specific objectives, provides for the development of higher cognitive skills, is well-organized and well designed and suitable to the ability of the students.
