Synopsis

This study investigated the performance level of the first year high school students in Algebra between a private school and a public school and to know if the student-related factors can affect the student’s performance level. Results show that student related factors such as: mathematics achievement, family size, educational attainment of the parents, occupation of the parents, family income, daily allowance, learning assistance, study habits and attitude towards mathematics does not affect the student’s performance level in Algebra. Also, the study proved that the secondary curriculum that is being implemented were still applicable to the learning styles and performance of students in Mathematics and it is both effective in a private and a public type of school. Furthermore, there is no significant difference between the students’ performance of public and private school. Thus, the type of school does not affect the performance of students in Mathematics.
