Mathematical Performance of Fourth Year High School Students of Selected National High Schools and its Relationship to Student and Teacher Related Variables
Synopsis
This study investigated the mathematical performance of fourth year high school students of selected national high schools and its relation to some student related factors. The student-respondents of this study were randomly selected from three National High Schools and the instruments used are: demographic survey, attitude test questionnaire, and mathematical performance test. Results show that although the students have a neutral attitude towards Mathematics, in general, they have a poor performance in the content areas considered in the study (Functions, Linear Functions, Quadratic Functions, Polynomial Functions, and Exponential and Logarithmic Functions). Additionally, there is no significant association between students’ performance in mathematics, and type of elementary school and parents’ educational attainment. On the other hand, gender and attitude towards mathematics are significantly associated to students’ mathematical performance.
